Lord Howe Island is the perfect destination for hiking fanatics. Diana hikes a beautiful track to watch the sun rise on Neds Beach.

  • The hike to Malabar Hill is a crowd favourite on the island and starts near the bottom of Neds Beach with a short walk through the Forrest, past the giant banyan trees and friendly cows.
  • Ascending the cliff face is where it starts to get rocky but don't be alarmed, it is an easy to intermediate hike perfect for families with active kids, couples and solo travellers.
  • Be sure to pack some snacks and water to keep you going, there are several convenient spots to stop and take it all in as you make your way up.
  • Dozens of native and migratory bird species can be found all year round and with the 14 species of seabird known to breed here in huge numbers.
  • Malabar Hill is the perfect spot to witness the vast numbers of mutton birds that call the island home, returning to their burrows at dusk each evening, a fascinating spectacle of the aviary realm.
  • The Mount Gower Trek justly deserves its ranking as one of Australia’s top day walks. Taking approximately five hours to reach the summit at 875 metres and another four hours to return, this trek should not be taken lightly.
  • During the trek you will enjoy the views of Balls Pyramid, Mt Lidgbird, the lagoon and the Island’s northern settlement area.
