Nature and wildlife

Story: Nature and wildlife
Episode: 2
Presenter: Scherri-Lee Biggs
Air Date: 3rd December, 2022

What is a visit to Rottnest Island without paying a visit to the local wildlife and the famous fluffy Quokkas!

  • Not found anywhere else in the world, Rottnest Island is inhabited by the friendly faces of Quokkas, a smaller cousin of the kangaroo.
  • Visitors are asked to not touch or feed the friendly quokkas, despite their irresistible fury faces and inquisitive nature.
  • The quokkas can be seen at any point of the day, in most places, but they are especially out and about in the early morning or in the evening, as they are naturally nocturnal.
  • Quokkas aren’t the only wildlife available to see at Rottnest, the majestic humpback whales are very commonly spotted off the coast during their migration season.
  • You can also catch glimpses of the long-nosed fur seals in huge numbers, sunbathing on the rocks and splashing in the water.
  • You can also view some more underwater life by taking a self-guided snorkelling tour, where you follow trail markers as you swim.
  • Or you could take a 3-hour guided snorkelling tour with Rottnest snorkel experience, which is a great way to get up and close with the variety of sea life, in a reef protected location.
